The Pilates Method The Pilates Method is a movement technique performed in a sequence, either on a floor mat or on spring resistant equipment invented by Joseph H. Pilates. It is an full body conditioning program, injury preventative and rehabilitative therapy. The emphasis is on centering your body by developing the strength of your core muscles; the abdominals and back muscles. The sequence of exercises are designed to strengthen and stretch your muscles in specific patterns, body relationships and planes of movements. Basic movement principles are ingrained into the technique to help the body perform and function, such as concentration on the activity being performed, control of your body muscularly and of the equipment on which you are on and breathing throughout the exercise to direct the bodies’ energy, to contract the abdominal muscles for centeredness and to relax the body. The sequence, when done repetitively, helps your body perform and function better due to an aligned, strong & supple structure.
